Whenever people talk of Albania, one of the topics that seems to come up often is Albanian maffia. From our point of view, we very often seem te have a negative image of Albania as a country.
If there is one goal for this blogpost, it definitely is that I want to change that image. Because seriously; ALBANIA IS AMAZING! We all want to travel to experience a different world and preferably we don't want to spend too long in cars/planes/buses/trains to do this. If you live in Europe, don't hesitate to choose Albania then, because it is part of Europe and you direct flights from Brussels and many other European countries. Even though it is in Europe and not far to go to, you'll arrive in a country in which some inhabitants hadn't seen a banana until the 90's. Can you imagine?
So yes, Albania is very famous for its interesting history. After the World War II until 1990 it was under the communist leadership of Enver Hoxha. He kept the country cut off from the rest of the world. And that is the reason why Albania has such a beautiful own culture, independent from the neighbouring countries.
Spread all over the country, you will find relics of this communist period, of which you can visit several. Even in Tirana, you can visit a few of the bunkers, so you don't even have to go far!
Are you more interested in Albanias history (long) before WWII? Then you are also in the right country, because you will find a lot of interesting sites here from the Ottoman era. History lovers unite!
But of course it is not just its culture and history that makes Albania into a nice holiday destination. You should definitely enjoy its impressive nature as well. If you prefer mountains or oceans, it does not really matter, because you'll find both. For example, one of Europes most beautiful mountain hikes can be found in the Albanian Alps, but you can just as well take a boat to cross an impressive fjord and visit beautiful waterfalls. At the seaside, you will find white sandy beaches, a beautiful marine life and awe-inspiring cliffs. And if that is not enough to convince you; in the center of the country you can find the blue eye, a beautiful canyon you can swim in... If you love nature, you'll find plenty of activities in Albania.
